                            BMW M1 Procar

In the late 1970s, Italian manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation, but conflicts arose that prompted BMW to produce the car themselves. The result was sold to the public, from 1978 to 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the only mid-engined BMW to be mass-produced. It employed a twin-cam M88/1 3.5 L 6-cylinder petrol engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. The engine had six separate throttle bodies, four valves per cylinder and produced 277 PS (204 kW; 273 hp) in the street version, giving a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph). Turbocharged racing versions were capable of producing around 850 hp (634 kW). Only 453 production M1s were built, making it one of BMW's rarest models. Of the 453 produced, 20 were race versions created for the BMW M1 Procar Championship.

In 1979 the head of BMW Motorsport, Jochen Neerpasch, devised a one-make championship using racing modified M1s. The series was created to aid BMW in building enough M1s to enter the Group 4 classification in the World Championship for Makes. The new series, known as the Procar BMW M1 Championship, served as a support series for Formula One, and included many current Formula One drivers in identical cars. The series ran for two years, with Niki Lauda winning the 1979 season, and Nelson Piquet the 1980 season. After BMW met the standards for Group 4, the Procars were used by various teams in the World Championship as well as other national series.

                            - there are 3 physics sets :
                            PROCAR_M1.HDC - Procar Championship
                            PROCAR_M1_GTO.HDC - IMSA GTO class
                            PROCAR_M1_GR4.HDC - WCM Group4 class
                            - the origin mod is linked to GTC-TC-76 class and the BMW CSL.

BMW M1 for GTL, Procar, Group-4 and IMSA GTO.

                            BMW M1 Procar
When it became clear that BMW were not going to make the homologation numbers to get the M1 into Group-4 for 1979 they came up with the idea of the procar series.
Basically an IROC style championship with professional drivers all in “Identical” BMW M1s we all know the story so I don’t need to go in that too much.
Cars were entered by factory supported teams as well as by independent teams.
At first I set all the Porcar rev limits at 8500rpm as 8500 was the mandatory rev limit for the Procar events. At least it started that way but after the first 2 races there were complaints from the independent teams that the Factory cars were faster in a straight line than the independent cars seemed to be. To eliminate the possibility of cheating on this the limit was removed.
So I set the Procars default rev limit (also the limit that the AI will drive the cars at is set to 9000rpm) with 9200rpm being the max allowable in the adjustment.
Reports are that the M1 was a pretty easy car to drive, well balanced and surprisingly forgiving. That is the personality that I have tried to emulate.
Good grip, good aero and a power curve that has most of the power at the top of the rev band means that there is no big torque spike in the mid range to deal with so you can be very aggressive with the throttle coming out of corners.
The Baseline set up is a little on the soft side this seemed to work the best for me on most tracks there is room to go stiffer in the adjustments if you prefer that.

                            ---

                            BMW M1 Group-4
BMW could not meet the homologation requirement of 400 cars built so the M1 was not allowed in group 4, the class it was originally intended for.
So when the M1 did show up at FIA events it mostly ran as an over 2-liter sports prototype.
However the DRM series in Germany which based it's rules on the FIA class groups (mostly) was free to ignore the homologation rule and willing to allow it to run in a sub group of its division 1 Class.
Division 1 was for full group 5 cars and the 475hp M1 had no chance racing against the 700+hp 935s but points could be scored separate for the group 4 cars.
Despite its big lack of power to the other big GT cars of the time (most turbocharged) the M1 was pretty fast on some tracks

Physics for the group 4 cars are basically the same as the Procar but with the rev limit set to 9200 in the default. With slightly more grip and less weight than the standard Procar. The baseline set up is the same as on the procars other than the defalt rev limit.
Driven hard it capable of pretty fast lap times good turn in, some mid corner push as power is applied but aggressive power use will reward your lap time. The tail can be drifted with confidence though there is a limit to what you can get away with. My best lap times are by keeping the attitude of the car stable with very little drifting and keeping my corner entry speed high.

                            ---

                            BMW M1 GTO
IMSA like the DRM based it rules loosely on the FIA and also like the DRM could wave the Homologation requirement if it wanted to.
Dave Cowart and Kenper Miller felt right away that the M1 could be the car to have in the GTO class. Indeed the M1 had showed up in some the events in the USA already though having to run as a Group-5 car but it was clear that as a GTO (group-4) car it would be fast.
So they bought a freshened up Procar from BMW at the end of 79 hoping to run it in 1980 as a GTO car. IMSA however was not sure about the car and made it run as a GTX (group-5) car in 1980 the M1 of course had noting for 935s now making 800+ HP but it gave the team a year of sorting out the car.
In 1981 IMSA let it run in GTO
To my mind this would really be the place the M1 finally showed how fast it could have been if it had been allowed to race as a group-4 car.
By 81 they had removed a huge amount of weight from the M1 compared to its procar delivery weight.
They were not the only ones that showed up in 81 with M1s for GTO Dennis Aase and several others also had them and the M1 dominated GTO in 1981. the Porsche 934 and RSR and big block corvettes sometimes offered a small fight but the only real challenge came from the turbocharged 280zx. The M1s won all but 2 or 3 races in GTO in 81 with the Dave Cowart and Kenper Miller red lobster car winning 11 events and the GTO title.
The GTO M1 Physics are different from the Procar and Group-4 car mainly by being 180 pounds lighter so the car is faster by a real amount. In real life the GTO M1s were as fast as the 1977 GTO cars that were allowed full Group-5 bodywork and wings so that was my performance target for the car Handling is almost the same as the Group-4 car but the lower weight just improves the car in every way.

                            ---

                            A final note
This car and most all of the IMSA cars and Group-5 cars with wings have been built to use the advanced menu Modification for GTL.
This mod opens up all the same garage set up adjustments available in GTR-2.
Most useful being the wing adjustments and high speed damper adjustments.
The menu mod is available at Racing.fr in the utility’s section of there GTL downloads.

If you are having a hard time finding it PM me at NoGrip
I believe you must have a non starforce encrypted game for the menu mod to work.
