why you crash into the back of the car in front

Race Starting Dynamic

Lets have a look at the Dynamics of a race start, from the perspective of the Pole Position (driver P) and Last Place on the Grid (driver L) and no other cars or drivers on the track, although their mind sets will still take account of other drivers.

See attached diagram.

300 m = from the turn in point (TIP), terminal velocity on the straight, on the limiter in top.
250 m = from the TIP, last place (LP) on the grid.
150 m = from the TIP, pole position (PP)
000 m = TIP for T1, brakes off. 50 MPH MAXIMUM

And their off, on the acceleration phase………………

Driver P:
Accelerates too the Optimum Pole Position Brake Point (OPP-BP) and has reached 100 mph and is 50 meters from the TIP on the left hand side of the track, and is now into his Braking Phase

Driver L:
Accelerates too the Optimum Last Place Brake Point (OLP-BP) and has reached 150 mph and is 100 meters from the TIP on the right hand side of the track, and is now into his Braking Phase.

Driver P Mind Set:
Has invested a great deal of skill and effort in getting the pole and knows that out braking himself into T1 could lose him a several positions, he also might be thinking about jump starts and a stop/go penalty. He did in fact start braking 10 metres before the OPP-BP, so he’s now doing 90 mph and has 60 metres until the TIP, this gives him an extra 10 metres to slow the car as it’s at maximum weight with cold tyres, he is on the left hand side of the track to defend the corner, he’s not on the racing line so he uses the extra 10 meters well so he shouldn’t run wide through T1 and gets a perfect T2.

Driver L: Mind Set
He is banking on taking advantage of the impending carnage at T1, He did not actually start braking until he was 10 metres past the OLP-BP Optimum Last Place-Brake Point (10m is 2 car lengths), so he’s now doing 160 mph and is only 90 metres from the Turn In Point has cold tyres and a full tank of petrol and is OUT OF CONTROL but he doesn't know why, as he can't make the corner, he will not be able to drive round anyone that has had a mishap on T1 or T2 as he’s going 20 mph too fast into T1 but might get a luck bounce off of some one that might put him back on track., but he is on the right hand side of the track entering T1.

Various assumptions and simplifications:
Both drivers are of equal skill, but may have different mind sets.
Both drivers have the same car, setups and full fuel loads.
The cars maximum acceleration/braking are both linear and the same at 10 mph per 10 metres.

TIP: before you start a real race, set up your local machine for a 3 lap race on the track in question, with the cars in question and also have AI cars on, and do at least 1 race with the fuel load you intend to start with in the real race, remember to check the race server full usage as if it's set to 2 x fuel usage you'll need to add twice the amount of fuel so the car is at the correct weight for your practice race.

TIP: unless your running a super computer you are going to get a lower FPS (Frames Per Second) at the start of a race, don't be surprised when it happens.

TIP: you might encounter a bit of warp or lag (you shouldn't get much lag or warp on a modern server, you are seeing other peoples connection problems, unless everyone is doing it), there's not much you can do about this if it happens, all you can do is leave a bigger gap and more space between you and the cars around you.

will update this

Your so right Gogs m8 but unfortunately there are thick heads out there who can't or won't read! Also those who get mixed up with the left and right foot!

I think we should start a bad boy list and top of that would be Pred25k (think that's his full title) he is always running into the back of others.

Watch the replay of tonights Porsche race at Monza, on the 1st lap he brakes far to late at the 3rd corner and hits wisi hard in the side and continues to hit him on the other side on the next corner of the chicane. He carries on but wisi out-drags him up the back straight only to be spun by Pred25k again. Unfortunately this has a catastrophic effect as wisi is spun to the centre of the track and is hit by following cars an there is an almighty crash of about 9 or 10 cars.

Yes guys Pred was the idiot who spoilt your race! How many times is Pred the 1st one out of a race, a hell of a lot! He's not even a member of the Bude!

Anyone else got any thing to get off their chest?

I'd like to view the recorded Monza race but it seems I may need to load a program to view it. When I open VCR Archive all I see are a bunch of individual icons. Any suggestins? Thanks, JB

Well ...that's because your doing it the wrong way I had the same problem when I first tried

What you do is go off-line and still remaining in GTL simply go to replays look for the track you just raced on and hit play! as easy as that

Don't you feel really stupid now Exactly how I felt. Mind this will not work if you chose not to save replays or you have raced on that track since as these are overwritten by latest data but... Those great administrators at the Bude x x x have sorted that problem by saving VCR footage for us...

On the Bude Home Page got to VCR archive look for the server you were on and and then the track and download the VCR. This can be slightly confusing as there are more than one file for that track and if you can't remember which server you were on you will have to download all of the files but the trick is to download only the bigger files of that track. Once downloaded drop and drag that file into the Replay and watch and you DO NOT NEED to exit GTL to do this

Happy viewing ...well maybe not ...sometimes you cannot see all the cars ...stop worrying ...press the + & - keys on the keypad till all the cars appear ...now you can light you ciggy and pick up that pint and sit back and view!

The '+ & -' trick also works when you are actually racing and car sometime become invisible

See you on track, maybe at the front, maybe at the back, maybe in the middle somewhere or maybe in the pits, but as long as we are racing I'll love the Bude to bits!

Post edited by: Geedee, at: 2007/09/10 06:36

hi dirtyfr,

i would love to translate it, but i dont think one of them ramming blockes is

a) gonna understand it (i hardly did)
b) gonna change any behaviour.

the good drivers do all they can to avoid crashes anyways, they know the race is long, and there is the chance to catch up.

the back drivers...im not too worried about either, because most of them are aware of their performance and drive accordingly and very fair.

the problem makers are the ones that,

a) deliberately crash (cant help them for sure)
b) are trying to hard with their car, and wanna pass everyone in the first corner (cuz they think they'll otherwise never see the top group again ..or something)

anyways, good effort for trying to clear some of that starting fog...

but to be honest, for all that were involved in this yesterday at monza....

ITS NOT NEW IN THAT CORNER
ITS GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN

so, like the instructor at the real nordschleife told me two weeks ago "look more in the mirrors than up front"

i have a slight feeling, that the old chaps used to public server madness and professional wreckers, can cope much better with this stiuation
and the situation yesterday was: 4 servers, filled up to the max.

considering not long ago there was one server, you can imagine the number of new people that came from publics......... i would be surprised to see surprised faces about yesterday

nonetheless, keep racing!

regards,
D H

ps: i couldnt start, because my DMZ was changed 15 mins before start (that meant GTL wouldnt work online anymore )
