I went to watch ice racing with my son yesterday. The place was quite unique, over 100 years old sports field very near the city center. Our winters (in March) aren't what they used to be and it's been four years since this happening was able to be organized last time.
There were 20 three round heats where every of the 16 competitors drove against each other, four in each heat. The heat winner got 3 points, second 2 points and third 1 point, fourth was left without. After 20 rounds the points were summarized and four best drove the final which was four laps long.
The cars in the final were Volvo 240, Ford Escort Mk II, Opel Kadett GTE and Opel Corsa B. The Volvo driven by John K. Westman had won all heats attended while the others had less wins and points. But in the final Volvo/Westman got not so perfect start and four laps were not quite enough to catch the lead. We got a 'surprise' winner Ari-Pekka Pylväs with his Escort. As a long time member of ETCC Escort Service Junior Team I feel happy for him.
