an idea or 2 18 Years, 6 Months ago
after looking at the replay of the pantera event last week, i starting thinking

pantera event, NOTES:

10th place at the end of lap 1,
started in 28th place,
passed 18 cars that had crashed or gone off the track on the 1st lap.

Bude servers are normally populated by highly skilled drivers so why are people driving so badly at race events.

Maybe the numbers don't add up, 3 servers with 70 drivers, where do they come from, are people registering with the bude downloading the tracks and cars and then just jumping onto an event racing with no track time.

the idea
how about putting the event password into a forum that you can't get into unless you have driven XXX km or XXX laps (500km or done 100 laps) on bude servers.

Our main idea from the very beginning is to be open for everyone who likes to join our services.

But you're IMHO right in your idea to sperate/classify the guys since we do have enough servers now

The "judgement" based on the driven kilometers would be additional efforts for the admins, so we tried a different way in yesterday's supercup...

One of the servers (server#2) was open for Teamspeak user only.

The passoword was shared on TS only, not on the website.

Based on yesterday's experience I would say that's a real good step into the right direction.

Since everybody was/is able to send a "spoken thank you" in case of bad behavior everyone was realy fair to each other as far as I saw.

So we'll take keep this strategy and hope it will lead into real gentleman races at least on the "TS-driven" game server.

We do also have English channels on TS (although nearly unused, don't know why), so maybe you give it a try next time?

cheers,
Uwe

Hallo Uwe,

@Kai..
Richtig.

Hi dirtyvfr!

Sorry for writing german on the english board. I told Uwe, that some people -so do i- don't want to talk to somebody else during race. It causes serious mistakes to my driving line and furthermore i speak a real deep bavarian slang the most Germans wouldn't understand . And possibly talking in english - not a chance! So Teamspeak is surely not the best solution for me. But now they want to persuade me to try it ...

Greets,

cheers for the updates

it was only an idea anyway,

but it wasN'T to group (for want of a better work) "faster" drivers with faster drivers as that doesn't matter.

it was just a way to ensure everyone on any of the event servers had in fact driven GTL online on bude servers.

and seeing as you already have stats on every driver of their laps/distances covered and then linking this to one section of the forum.

i think it's much more problematic than i first thought.

I agree that something has to be done to stop the non members who cannot drive very well and have no manners from racing with us.

Personally speaking I did not come on-line until I felt I had acquired enough skill on the game AI racing and then it was a steep learning curve. Some drivers purchase the game and come on-line the very same day!

I used to run a Radio Control Car Club and I ran in a different way to all other clubs. I put drivers into groups according to their ability. There was group 1. for the best drivers and so on down to group 5. which was mainly for beginners. Obviously this created more work as I had to monitor the progress of every driver for every race they had.

The system worked really well as the drivers in the lower groups always wanted to do better and it gave them something to aim for.

Perhaps we could use a similar system here say over 3 servers. The top drivers, good drivers and beginners mainly. Could the groups be managed by using the drivers stats as already suggested which would save monitoring of each driver personally and a way of making drivers want better stats.

Then if a driver misbehaves could the stats be altered in a way that would exclude them from certain groups? Or who gets excluded could be decided by a weekly vote?

I know one thing for sure, this is a great server and I will do anything to preserve it's integrity and I know an awful lot of you other drivers agree with that.

See ya on the track Gents - The Old Git aka Gee-Deeman aka Victor Meldrew, he he

Long live the Bude ! ! !

Re:an idea or 2 18 Years, 6 Months ago
With the Radio Controlled car club it only ran for 4 hours 1 night a week and catered for 20 to 50 drivers and I watched every race (18 races at most) and made mental notes on the performance of each driver. From this I would sit at home and work out who went into what group. It took a lot of heart searching, thinking time and work to try and get the balance right.

With the amount of drivers and races on the Bude 24/7 you are not going to get anyone to watch every driver and every race and decide who goes where.

It has to be done by a program and unless someone can write one especially then the best way at the moment is to see if the 'Best Laps', 'Ranking List' or details of 'Covered Distance' in the 'Paddock' can be used separately or combined somehow to make the decisions.

At the R/C club we had the wreckers and the late breakers etc., and a committee would decide on any action needed. Perhaps a committee could be appointed to check out any complaints by not only looking at the amount of complaints about one person but use any VCR footage available and to prompt other drivers to give their witness account.

I believe that by taking a fairly hard approach to bad behaviour it will forewarn any would be trouble maker that we will not tolerate bad manners and un-gentlemanly conduct on the Bude.

These are only my thoughts so you must please contribute your ideas and feelings on this subject and in that way we can hopefully find a really good solution to a problem that could unfortunately get worse if not nipped in the bud.

Long Live the Bude ! ! !

Sorry but ~ I think its not a good idea to limit the races.... five servers are up and running now. The download tickets are rotating all the time so there must be tonnes of users.

I practiced with the pantera and didn't enter because i knew i cant drive the damn thing (capri man myself)

If you password the server and restrict access then numbers will drop and it will become a members only club and detrioriate.

New starters must download the cars and tracks and therefore put some effort in. this need to be cultivated.

would you prefer to introduce no people into the game and have a grid of 6? Or introduce 15 to the game and have two grids of 28... and 16 new starts crash out but get a taste of the bude?

The pantera is to extreme an example to start limiting access.

I feel that the combination of Pantera's and a track that is notoriusly hard to pass on (not just through the high banked sections) definately led to alot of the problems with the race. The previous Abarth event was one of the funnest races i've been in. After 37,000kms logged here it was also my first event i've joined in on as well. I agree that some type of ranking system for ability would be good. Too many new racers seem to drive like they'd screw. All over the place and done by lap 3 Perhaps if you dont cut the mustard you dont get to drive the fastest car for the event. Somthing of a 2 class race.(GTC class perhaps?) Papyrus's Nascar 2003 had a LPI (laps per "incident&quot rating that limited access to servers. Using the Bude's ranking list like this would be a good idea. It would encourage drivers to learn all the tracks and improve their driving skills. The same ranking list or # of km's logged should be used to restrict the ability to post custom car skins for events. Just my 2 cents.

The Pro Sim Racing Leauge (PSRL) uses RELAY anti-cheat system for rFactor races. They also make it manditory for drivers to earn racing licenses (A,B, or C class) prior to entering any compititions. I'm wondering if any of this technology can be applied to the bude & GTL. Especially the internet TV channel that broadcasts their large events. Check out www.ProSimRacing.com for a complete description for their qualification process.

Post edited by: Forsythe, at: 2007/09/13 08:26

Re:an idea or 2 18 Years, 6 Months ago
Here is a simple solution and it has been staring us all in the face!

We do not want to make people do anything they do not want too within the scope of the Bude's philosophy. So, we give all drivers the chance to drive in three (out of 5) different levels of difficulty. These being Beginner, Amateur or Professional. This would be easy to do as the game is set up so you can do it.

At the moment all we have is the Professional level and as this is such a great site drivers of all abilities are wanting to drive here.

We could have the 3 original servers for Professional level and the 2 new servers for Beginner & Amateur level.

This would bring in more members as there must be those out there who won't join the Bude until they feel good enough to drive at the highest level.

Long live the Bude!

interesting but i'm not sure it's that good an idea to have any servers running anything but PRO.

there are no AI car on the servers, the only thing you are giving new drivers is extra driving aids and that's NOT helpful in learning how to drive, as the Autospin/ABS/Traction Control/Blah Blah take over control, so people are only learning track layouts.

the place for people to learn how to drive SIMS is on their local machine racing AI, i'm not sayng they should be able to bet the AI at PRO, but they should have the ability to do 10 laps without crashing before entering the online world of SIM racing.

In a perfect world you would be right 'Gogs' but unfortunately there are those who buy the game and come on line straight away or without really doing any mileage off-line.

This will continue to happen as we cannot control it, so if we can ease the situation a bit by providing nursery servers then we can at least get them to learn to steer the cars before hopefully coming on to a professional status server.

There is another side to this which me must also see. As I have already mentioned, I did not join the Bude until I felt I could race on the professional level so if we change it so lower levels are available then we can attract more drivers which means more potential 'Donors' for financial support or the Bude.

Also we have a chance to help shape these drivers with Forum advice and even give them some training if you join them to give help.

All in all it is not just about us now, but the Bude and new drivers of the future and I think a bit of compromise is worth the effort in this instance.

Gordon aka Gee-Deeman aka 'Victor Meldrew aka The Old Git aka Gogs2.

PS. I and many other racers can still crash now and again within 5 laps never mind 10.

Having a server on beginner mode (or so) would not be very fair, because all the laptimes in the database were done in Pro mode.

That is true Nils, but we can't have everything we want in life but it will give them times to aim for.

Better to have a server you can feel comfortable to race on than a server where you are going to be cursed for being to slow or on the racing line in others way etc.

Racing should not only be about winning but enjoying the experience and camaraderie and that is what we need. If all are out just to win or get the top time then you will attract a more ruthless type of driver which happens on the professional servers.

Cheers,

Gordon aka Gee-Deeman
