there seems to be several situations where you will get "General Error" (I know of 3 I think)

Maybe this is a new one....

I am trying to help a GC member to register.

His setup seems to be correct.

He is at the registration screen and clicks the big arrow... but gets "Registration failed: General Error"

TCPview is showing that GTL is connecting to the correct IP number...

GTL.exe:4676 TCP 192.168.1.100:55490 87.106.79.180:803 ESTABLISHED

He has tried a few different names, all with same result.

Do you know what is wrong?

Can you tell me the names?
In the log I can look for a more specified error message.

And please check the correctness of the online key (28 characters). The first weeks I didn't check the validity of the keys, but since some users have problems with a wrong key (they always get the Austin Mini), I check the length (the one and only check I can made) of the key.

I have not much possibilities to return, because the game did not support more return values.

In the log I found "REGISTER: FAILED.INVALID username".
Because the username is ok, it must be the online key.

ok, no worries I'll add it to my list

(but if there is no return value possible to indicate "Invalid serial", maybe something other than "General Error" would be better, because that message has several other causes?)

this is happening to me now too...it will let me in once, but if I close & relaunch GTL I get that error


I need to create another account each time for it to work...and then it only works once

I am getting the "general Failure" error all the time as well. The one time it did work, I was asked to provide the online key. I cannot get it to ask for it again and I get the failure error now.

I have clobbered my GTL install and starting from scratch to see if that will help.

It does not help that my GTL CD only has the Starforce code, not an additional online code.

Starforce don't seem to understand this when I ask for help and keep putting me off.

Has anyone discovered the magic formula to get GTL online. I'm beginning to think you have only one shot at it.

Still can't log onto the lobby, but...
Checked .PLR file for bude IP adress (87.106.79.180) and lobby text. All OK.

Able to find the lobby, just can't get connected properly.

Played with the dedicated server. It asked for the online serial number. I put in the (only) Starforce CD code and it worked fine. This confirms it works as the online code too. eg. I was able to download online setups.

I think we need help from the server crew.

The online serial number and the DVD (starforce) serial number are two different things. If you want to play online, you need an online code.

The DVD serial code is just to unlock the starforce checker.

And for sure, you need to register to the lobby, not just to log in to the lobby with any data, you never registered with.

Starforce are adamant that once GTL loads, they have no further esponsibility. In a minute I will try again with them, but am not optimistic.

and... why does the dedicated server find the SF code OK? It works fine, allowing me to download car setups from the online garage. ???

Today, the Starforce code appears in the updater 'Tweaks' menu, but is being rejected because it is 25 char's long without hyphens, and 29 char's long with them, and it is looking for 28. Can you chg this parm at the server?

The protection schemes are making life a living heck.

You can change the serial code in the Autoupdater. It will correct it automatically in the registry.

Enter it without hyphens. The online key has 4 char´s between the hyphens, when I am right.

I am confused tho...

It is the updater that is rejecting the code. The SF code is 25 char's (5 * 5) without hyphens and 29 with (5*5+4).

I have another (problematic) GTL (w/GTR2 bundle). The online code is 7*4 char's = 28.

I believe I am screwed unless SF can come back with an online code for me. I mailed them moments ago, but won't hear back until tomorrow likely.

I will probably end up killing this install (again) and try the bundle. It took me 5 days to get Starforce to gt it working before, and it went belly up after 3 days, but I think I got on as 'maxtork'.

Can you tell if I was succesful at logging on GTL as maxtork? I have been so busy installing GTL/ABB and building a new PC, etc. I can't remember exactly what I did.

If you can not find the key and do not have any problems with protection system then please contact the game publisher or the place where you have bought the game. The key delivery to the customers is up to them.

With 10Tacle belly, there is only the developer left, SimBin. Would they have imbedded the online code in the app? I will try them once, but last time they told me to see 10TAcle!

Likely, I will end up uninstalling the retail version and re-install a GTR2/GTL bundle I have.

The bundle however only has the online code, you have to go thru SF to get a working unlock code. I have done this and the unlock code went belly up for some reason. I can't remeber what happened now, that was a week or two ago. Since then, I built a new gaming PC and installed the retail GTL. It runs LAN & one player fine, but it looks like it will never live online

Flipping protection is a posterior ache!

You are confusing me, too

Starforce is not the supporter for online key problems. It is a company to create safety systems for DVD checks.

When you are contacting anybody, contact the publisher of the game, which is ATARi at the moment. Maybe, they will give you any online key.

The problem ist, there are versions of GTL with online key and somehow there are versions without. And if you can´t find any online key in the cover, you need to contact ATARI

And no, the Autoupdater do not generate any online or Starforce key. It just show you the key, which is entered in the registry and you can change it by typing a new one (which shoulb be a correct one).

Update: Big Ron got back to me and confirmed there are versions of GTL that do not have an online code! What the heck is the point to selling an app like that?

Anyway, knowing that, I will install my other copy and see if it is stable.

I will use the other one for LAN racing I quess.

Meanwhile, I have learned:

If you buy retail, open the pkg and see what keys are included. Also, check with online vendors to see what theirs includes.

If you can't find the bude server, check the .PLR text file to make sure the bude hooks are in place. Running the Autoupdater should make this happen.

Install the app, unlock it, then create a driver (called 'sample' or 'default' to get a .PLR file with standard settings as a baseline.

Then, load the Altbierbude Autoupdater and load all the cars and tracks (updater 'tweaks' menu has a radio btn which fills your bank acc't and unlocks all the cars etc.).

Read these forums before you make all the mistakes yourself.

Like driving, take your time, think, and do it right. When you log onto the Altbierbude lobby and screw it up (as I did) it is a hassle to get your mistake fixed. Eg. I have my Starforce unlock code in my registry as the online code (dedicated server did this for me, or I entered it the one time GTL asked me for it).

I will be uninstalling GTL, otherwise I would have to edit the registry.

That's all I know so far. I'm sure by the time I finally race on Altbierbude I will have learned some more. I'm just afraid I will not live long enough to know enough!

And remember, the men in Germany are hotter than other countries women probably because:

1. Most other countries hot women have moved to Canada!
