Both my wife and I have an account with seperate e-mail addresses but share the same computer but they say you can't have multiple accounts ...right! So I have one and my wife has one. I must admit I did have another one for myself but I haven't used it for a while.
Can anyone tell these these short sighted admins at NoGrip to have some common sense.
Maybe we should just all stop using them as they are getting so paranoid over downloads that are done by the GTL community for free.
What do you think about this???
as we know and respect each other, we're sharing the same opinion most of the time, but sorry to say this time I need to veto your posting.
Nogrip's new Boss 'Jabba' and the whole vital&kind admin team supporting him did a fantastic job in my humble opinion after Dan dropped the ownership a couple of month ago!
I assume you didn't consider all points of view this time with your posting but just only feeling disappointed to be currently blocked from the service.
NG is a non-Commercial community like we're at the "Buden" too, all of these kind guys are working hard for this community in there leisure time absolutely free of charge.
Guess you know all non-Commercial communities do have the same problem....the costs of the servers and the traffic.
If you take a look the monthly costs and the donations, you will find out that the financial burden is very tough from month to month.
Most of the time the bill isn't paid until the latest days of the month at NG.
The biggest part of the bill is traffic (download volume) so they need to balance the traffic against the income.
If income is falling they need to reduce the traffic, if income is raising they are able to offer more traffic for free. It's a simple calculation.
We had a similar situation a couple of month ago. At this time our FTPs where occupied such hard, that the traffic of our "guests" dropped the download bandwidth of our donating members.
This doesn't seemed to be a fair situation for the members helping to pay the bill for our servers.
Stefan's fantastic autodownload-script solved the situation for all of us (ones more).
Due to the separation of Peer2Peer-Traffic for non-donating and DircetFTP-Traffic for donating members we're in the happy position to have a fair and reasonable solution.
If somebody is not willing (or not able) to spend some money and supporting the monthly bill for the servers he still can use our services by p2p-download,
but he will need to accept that the download speed is depending on other members sharing the files with him.
If somebody is helping to pay the bill for the servers by a donation he will get a direct connection our FTP-servers and get the max. bandwidth physically possible.
This seems only fair to me since these guys "own" the servers somehow.
I guess you remember that not everyone was happy about this solution especially since there where some minor technical issues in the beginning of this new service.
So it's the same situation with Nogrip...
They also have some members donating to pay the bills for their servers and these members get unlimited traffic.
They even offer a package of xx MB (xx, because this amount need to be adjusted from time to time based on the current financial situation) per day for all of us non-donating members as well.
Pls. clarify: Even the costs for this traffic need to be payed by the donating members!
So it's seems to be generous to me that they give this free of charge service to all of us although the costs needs to be covered by the donating community.
But some guys are violating this mechanism of taking care about the financial problems by using more than one account and getting the daily download limit x-times that way.
In case NG is not able to stop the multiply accounts and non-donating members will still cause costs x-times higher of the calculations, how can they pay theirs bills?
So NG needs to react and find a way to stop this behavior.
Just to say it in very clear words: In my humble opinion that step is absolutely necessary for NG to survive!
Like every technical system the "double account detections" will have some teething troubles in the beginning.
So accounts may be blocked by mistake although these accounts don't violate the rules.
If you feel to be blockes by mistake pls. simply drop a PM to the staff and explain them your troubles.
I guess the team will take your comments serious and discuss about.
In case they will come to the conclusion that they blocked you by mistake they will find a solution to re-enable it again.
Pls. clarify: They can only improve the mechanism based on detailed feedback of the users.
So Pls. don't pre-justice a whole community and it's admin team just only because of some technical issues.
Based on my personal experiences with the whole team at NG I'm feeling very comfortable at/with NG and have a lot of confidence to the kind guys over there.
If some of our local German communities would pay only 10% of that attention to the sorrows of their members, they would become a very better place in my humble opion, but that's a different story
