Alfa Romea GTA-SA Release 1 Year, 5 Months ago
Brickyard Legends Team & Protobuilders present :
                      Alfa Romeo GTA-SA

The Giulia 1600 GTA-SA (sovralimentato = supercharged) (1967–1968) was very rare racing car,
which was built only 10 copies. Autodelta modified the standard GTA 1600 cc and fitted two
aircraft cabin blowers, these compressors ran at up to 100,000 rpm and were powered by
an oil pump which was mounted on the carb side of the engine above the sump, there was also
an additional radiator mounted in front of the coolant radiator in order to cool
the supercharger oil. The pressurized air was fed into the air box from a supercharger
mounted at either end, there was also a bleed from the air box to the top of the Weber carbs
in order to maintain the correct pressure in the float chamber. In order to keep the charge cool,
water was injected into the inlet manifold this also had the additional benefit that
the GTA SA would run on standard petrol, which was necessary for homologation purposes.
The GTA SA's engine was virtually the same as the "standard" GTA corsa, the valve sizes,
the bore and stroke and even the compression ratio remained unchanged.

Homologated as a group 5 car the GTA SA was in competition with the ETCC cars of the time
(Lotus Cortina, Mini Cooper 1275S and BMW's 2002 as an example), in order to be competitive
the engine was tuned to produced 220 BHP @ 7500 rpm but with huge ammounts of torque. While
its weight was up on the standard GTA it still only weighed in at 780 Kg and its top speed
was now in the region of 145 mph. After extensive testing at Alfa Romeo's test track at
Balocco and Monza the GTA SA first appeared to the public at the 1967 Geneva Motor show
and won its first race at Hockenheim in the hands of the German driver Dau. Auto Delta
produced 10 GTA SA's but unfortunately the championship regulations changed and SA variation
had some serious overheating problems, not to mention astronomical fuel consumption to be
just 1600cc car; reports from the day talk about 90 liters per 100km! (2.6 miles per gallon.)

Physics simulate 2 of 3 reasons why this car was not really successful:
                      - Simulated: It overheats easily in slower speeds.
                      - Simulated: It is hefty drinker; In race, fuel consumption is 90 liters per 100km,
just like it did in active years.
                      - Not simulated: As the Superchargers were oil pressure driven by two aeroplane fresh
air cabin blowers spinning up to 100 000 rpm and the pressure box construction was
rather simplified, this one did not have wastegate valve at all, so the engine braking
was excessive hard. However as the suspension and chassis was just standard GTA setup
and tyres were only marginally wider, the handling is really handful in any case, so It
                      was left out.

Due reasons above, there's things to reduce risk of engine blow out when racing:
                      - In right hands and in right track this is very powerful and almost unbeatable in TC-65
class, but don't expect still easy wins.
                      - This thing is true european edition of muscle car; you'll never run out of torque or
power as long as you keep rpm over 3000rpm, but the chassis has been designed about 50%
less power, so do not expect this be easy to handle. Even with second longest final gear,
you might find the rear end slippery in high rpm range. Also the brakes are normal GTA
brakes, which work well, except in longer races they will severly fade.
                      - engine does scream up to 8000 rpm, if you adjust the limiter there, but the engine
health starts to reduce after 7500 rpm, so at least in longer races it is wise to lower rpm
limiter. Even below the max power output, which is at 7400rpm.

                      - Engine also builds up a lot more heat in higher rpm and most of that heat is dissipated
via radiator and oil cooler, which again work more effiently in higher speeds due better
airflow for them. So, for the tracks that you run low gears with very high rpm overheating
                      is expected.

                      - the mod is linked to TC-65 class and the Alfa Romeo GTA

great car, thanks adding this to the collection.
seems like the car is only available in the '60's cup class and not in the TC-65 class. Is that on purpose ?

Yes, unfortunately that is the case. I can only put a maximum of 31 cars in one class and the last place in the TC-65 was for the Fiat.

                      Glück auf!

                      Hi,

                      thanks for the car

seems to be allways to fast for TC-65 but in the GTC-65 there is no place empty too.

New classes are needed like GTC-76 Div.1 and Div.2 ...

                      Greets
