I wonder if it's safe to delete the archive-directories? Seems sort of unnecessary to keep all those zip-files or am I missing something?

Hello, I think the archive-files are useful for reinstallation. So if you crash your GTL-installation and want to reinstall it, you don't have to download all the cars/tracks again when executing the altbierbude-script, because most of them can be extracted from the compressed archives. So, of course there is no need for you to keep the files, but it saves you time when reinstalling and reduces the servertraffic.

OK, thanks for the answer. I'll keep the files for now then.
